Seiyuu - The Soul of Anime

Seiyuu or Voice Actors are the soul of anime as they bring the characters to life with their extraordinary voices. They mean so much to us that we even claim that ‘Japanese dubbing is the best in the world!’ and hate those people who watch English dub (including myself :P)! Lol! How they morph their voices into the characters and bend their voices to make extraordinary expression is incomprehensible!

I am sure most of you wanted to become a Seiyuu at one point, but it is one of the hardest jobs, even being discovered is a matter of luck! But here are some ways how a few of the major Seiyuu have become famous –

From broadcasting drama troupe member

Trained by broadcasting drama troupes, they specialized in roles requiring voice acting other than announcing, particularly radio drama acting.

Local broadcasting stations also helped many seiyū in the early stages of their careers, before the television age and the advent of foreign drama series concentrated most of the seiyū business in the Tokyo area.

From child actor

Some seiyū are middle-school children who joined juvenile theatrical companies (Himawari Company, Komadori Group) and honed their acting skills with them, then took up a career as full-time seiyū after graduating from high school. Examples include Maaya Sakamoto (voice of Ciel Phantomhive) and Aya Hirano (voice of Haruhi Suzumiya, who started voice acting while still in middle school)

From theatre actor

Sometimes theatre actors, whether they be in high school, specialization schools, university or having just graduated, are scouted by people in the anime industry to become seiyū. This happens to actors affiliated with the major Shingeki theatre companies, which include the Bungaku Company, the Seinen Company, the Troupe Pleiades, the Theatrical Group EN and Theatre Echo. Actors performing in minor theatres may sometimes be spotted by the theatre's sound production staff or by managers affiliated with seiyū management agencies. It is also common for actors affiliated with seiyū-led theatre companies, such as Nachi Nozawa's Rose Company or Kaneta Kimotsuki's 21st Century Fox Company, to become seiyū themselves.

To name a few, Romi Park (voice of Edward Elric), spotted by animation creator Yoshiyuki Tomino(original creator of Mobile suit Gundum), Fumiko Orikasa (voice of Kuchiki Rukia), graduated from the Super Eccentric Theatre, and talents discovered in local college theatre groups by Kazuya Tatekabe.

From seiyū training school student

Many seiyū made their debut after attending seiyū training schools for several years after graduating from high school, specialization schools or university, or even just between school terms, and learned the trade by observation. This is probably the easiest path to becoming a Seiyuu at its beginning, but breakthrough chances are very slim. For example, each school affiliated with the Yoyogi Animation Academy has a seiyū talent department with hundreds of new students each year, but only a very small minority of them manages to become a seiyū after graduating. People who made it in the past include Megumi Hayashibara who is one of the biggest names in the anime industry as a voice actress. She did the voice of Ranma in Ranma ½ and Ayanami Rei in Evangelion).

From a different role in the entertainment world

Miscellaneous ways in which voice actors became popular include; Idols (Japanese media personalities) sometimes have breakthroughs as Seiyuu, motion actors or voices for video games, live musicals or singers who branch out and become seiyu like Mamoru Miyano (Light from Death Note), Tokusatsu actors/actresses also took seiyu roles before or after their careers in Tokusatsu(lol! Check out the wiki page it is hilarious!!!). Examples are Tsutomu Isobe(Dutch in Black Lagoon), Jouji Nakata (Alucard from Hellsing), Rikiya Koyama (Yamato from Naruto), Masaya Matsukaze(Mikami Teru from Death note).

This video takes place in an anime event where Morita Masakazu (voice of Ichigo) and Itou Kentarou (voice of Renji) battle it out... Bankai! -

This Next video is from a Naruto movie showing our most favorite four voice actors! ^_^

This next one is Aya Hirano (voice of Haruhi Suzumiya) in one of the small scenes in the anime, she's awesome!

This one is just too Hilarious! The Death Note Voice actors are cosplaying as themselves! lol!

Quick translation:

Misa(Aya Hirano) : "Light-kun, what is it?"
Miyano Mamoru (Light) : "It's a limited first edition Ryuk figurine."
Kappei Yamaguchi (L) : [ with a finger in his mouth ] "It's probably irresistible for any DN fan."
Light : "Yeah. It's ideal for the new year."
L : [ stares ] "Light-kun, I don't know what you mean by that."
Light : "........ This will be a great good-luck charm for entrance exams."
L: "Not at all."
Light : "........."

If you have checked out these videos then either mouth is wide open or your stomach hurts from laughing. It’s really amazing when you see them in person, doing the voice over of characters we know so well. My personal Favorite voice actors are Romi Park who did leading roles in almost all the largest anime including, Bleach, Fullmetal Alchemist and Nana; Maaya Sakamoto for her voice of Ciel and her excellent singing voice, Aya Hirano who has ranked number 1 Seiyuu in Japan many times(read this article and the comments, I laughed till I cried! - http://kotaku.com/5606155/voice-actress-pisses-off-otaku) and last but not least Daisuke Ono who did the voice of Sebastien Michaelis and Itsuki Koizumi! ^_^

Well I hope you enjoyed this article as much as I had while writing it. Please leave comments and let me know who are your favorite voice actors! Until next time! ^_^
